Sonko declares PASTEF will not join Senegal’s next cabinet
A bold statement from the leader of the opposition movement PASTEF-Les Patriotes has sent shockwaves through Senegal’s political landscape. Ousmane Sonko made the declaration in a social media address that has since dominated national conversations.
Senegal’s political scene has been electrified by a decisive announcement from Ousmane Sonko, leader of the PASTEF-Les Patriotes movement.
Following intensive negotiations with the President of the Republic, Sonko revealed that fundamental disagreements remain unresolved. The discussions, though identifying some common ground, failed to bridge critical gaps in understanding the majority’s role within the executive framework.
“This morning witnessed an extensive meeting between the President of the Republic and President Ousmane Sonko,” Sonko stated. “While areas of agreement were identified, significant disagreements persist—particularly regarding the positioning and function of the majority within the executive structure, whose composition remains unclear.”
He concluded: “Consequently, PASTEF-Les Patriotes will not participate in the upcoming government and will not be represented by any minister.”
Official Statement from PASTEF Executive Committee
Acting in accordance with the Executive Committee’s (COMEX) responsibility and commitment—reaffirmed by President Ousmane Sonko upon his installation in the National Assembly—PASTEF-Les Patriotes initiated multiple exchanges with the President of the Republic to facilitate the formation of the new government.
This morning’s lengthy discussion between the President of the Republic and President Ousmane Sonko confirmed both convergences and persistent disagreements, especially concerning the role of the majority within the executive structure, whose structure remains undefined.
After presenting new proposals to the President following internal party consultations, no favorable response was received.
Therefore, PASTEF-Les Patriotes will not participate in the upcoming government and will not be represented by any minister.
Further details will follow.
We extend our best wishes for success to the new team.
