Senegal-Mali transporters seek to ease traffic congestion on Dakar-Bamako corridor

At Moussala in Senegal, a line of nearly 15 kilometers of trucks stretches toward the Mali border. Drivers find themselves stranded due to insufficient infrastructure to handle the growing traffic flow. The delays are taking a toll on transport operators, who face mounting challenges during these waits.

Daouda Singui Sarr, director of promotion and assistance at the Senegalese Shippers Council (Cosec), highlights the pressing issues. « The problems are manifold. Transit times are increasing, leading to additional costs for transporters. Drivers face further difficulties due to the lack of basic amenities, especially during the rainy season. »

The border crossing at Kidira has already seen improvements with the development of a 15-hectare truck parking facility. Now, authorities are exploring solutions for Moussala to alleviate congestion at this critical transit point.

« Our customs and border police counterparts have already taken steps by increasing staffing to expedite truck clearances, » explains Daouda Singui Sarr. « Why not replicate the modern parking project from Kidira to Moussala? »

Urgent measures are expected to be implemented in the coming weeks in collaboration with local authorities to address these bottlenecks.
