Record seizure of smuggled phones at Hillacondji border

The Beninese customs authorities have just achieved a major milestone in their ongoing battle against cross-border fraud. On July 12, 2026, a meticulously planned operation at the Hillacondji border crossing led to the interception of a substantial shipment of illegally imported mobile devices.

Under the leadership of Captain Fortuné Allagbé, the Hillacondji Customs Brigade successfully intercepted the consignment before it could infiltrate local black markets. In total, 5,574 smuggled Android smartphones were confiscated in this record-breaking seizure.

Strengthening border security and economic protection

This operation is a direct result of rigorous intelligence gathering and proactive surveillance conducted by customs teams along the border. The seizure underscores the intensified controls being implemented to crack down on illicit trade networks.

The Director-General of Customs, Colonel Raouf Malèhossou Aboudou, has been spearheading a comprehensive anti-fraud strategy that prioritizes zero tolerance for smuggling activities. By dismantling this smuggling ring, the customs administration is pursuing several critical objectives:

  • Safeguarding state revenue by preventing revenue losses from undocumented imports.
  • Ensuring fair market competition for legitimate businesses that comply with national regulations.
  • Protecting formal sector jobs linked to Beninese trade and commerce.
