Paris Saint-Germain reportedly maintains its long-standing interest in Julian Alvarez, a pursuit first initiated two years prior to his move from Manchester City to Atletico Madrid. However, the French giants now face potential competition from FC Barcelona, a development that would undoubtedly please Barça midfielder Pedri.

The future of Julian Alvarez has dominated headlines since the summer transfer window officially opened on June 15th, set to close on September 1st. The 26-year-old Argentine international is currently representing his nation at his second World Cup on the American continent. Despite being under contract with Atletico Madrid until 2030, the prolific Colchoneros forward reportedly has no intention of returning to the Spanish capital after the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup.
“I believe a transfer is what’s best for everyone”
On Monday, Argentina secured their spot in the 1/16th finals of the 2026 World Cup after a decisive 2-0 victory over Austria. Speaking in the mixed zone, Julian Alvarez chose to publicly express his desire for a change of scenery, hinting at a strong preference for FC Barcelona. “This isn’t the moment to discuss it, but I also cannot hide; I strive to be an honest person. I’ve communicated with the people at Atlético de Madrid, and I believe a transfer is what’s best for everyone. I want to achieve my dream.”
“I hope this move can happen, and if it does, all the better”
This declaration presents a significant challenge for PSG, who, just as in the summer of 2024 before his transfer to Atletico Madrid, reportedly maintain a keen eye on the situation of the Rojiblanco striker. Furthermore, at FC Barcelona, a warm welcome is already being extended to Julian Alvarez. This is evident from the remarks made by Pedri during his interview with RTVE. “A Julian Alvarez transfer to FC Barcelona? I think many things would need to align for that to happen. I don’t want to interfere with the club’s affairs, nor those of a player. It’s true that I adore Julian as a player, and I’ve always said I want the best players at Barça. I hope this move can happen, and if it does, all the better.” The FC Barcelona midfielder has certainly set the stage for a dramatic transfer battle. The question remains whether Paris Saint-Germain will respond publicly or behind the scenes to sway the balance in their favor for Alvarez’s signature.
