Ousmane Sonko, leader of the Pastef party and former Prime Minister of Senegal, has strongly denounced what he describes as a political conspiracy orchestrated by opposition deputies and independent legislators. The controversy stems from their recent decision to challenge his reinstatement as a member of the National Assembly before the Constitutional Council.
In a scathing statement, Sonko accused his adversaries of attempting to derail his political career through what he calls manipulative legal maneuvers. He argued that the opposition’s move was not only baseless but also indicative of a broader pattern of institutional abuse for political gain.
« Those who filed this appeal were fully aware that the Constitutional Council lacks jurisdiction over this matter,» Sonko declared. He further warned that any attempt to weaponize state institutions against him would be met with legal resistance, emphasizing his commitment to defending his constitutional rights through all available legal avenues.
The dispute centers on a decision made by the National Assembly Bureau on May 24, 2026, which reinstated Sonko as a deputy. Opposition lawmakers and independents argue that this decision violates the Constitution, particularly Article 54, which outlines conflicts of interest between public office and parliamentary mandates. They claim that Sonko’s prior appointment as Prime Minister and subsequent election as a deputy in 2024 created an inherent incompatibility, rendering his seat illegitimate from the outset.
The opposition’s legal challenge, announced in a communiqué dated June 1, 2026, seeks to annul the Assembly’s decision. However, Sonko has dismissed their claims as politically motivated, vowing to counter any further attempts to undermine his position through constitutional means.
