OGC Nice will now face a crucial playoff battle to retain its Ligue 1 status after a goalless draw against bottom-placed FC Metz. Despite the result, the outcome was sealed by victories from Auxerre and Le Havre, confirming Nice’s relegation playoff spot.
While the draw against Metz at home might not be the sole cause of regret for Nice, the fact remains that the Aiglons failed to secure a victory against the league’s last-place team when their top-flight future was on the line. Unexpectedly, Auxerre, who were level on points with Nice before the match, managed to defeat LOSC Lille with a 2-0 away win. Similarly, Le Havre, also in the relegation battle, triumphed 2-0 against Lorient.
The path to staying in Ligue 1 now involves two decisive playoff matches against Saint-Étienne, scheduled for May 26 and 29. These critical fixtures follow closely on the heels of the Coupe de France final, where Nice will face Lens this Friday at the Stade de France.
The next significant match for the club is the Coupe de France final against Lens, taking place this Friday, May 22, at 9:00 PM.
