Niamey celebrates third anniversary of Niger’s military-led refoundation

Tens of thousands of citizens took to the streets of Niamey this Saturday morning to mark the third anniversary of Niger’s Refoundation, a pivotal moment in the nation’s history that began with the military’s rise to power on July 26, 2023.

For many in attendance, the occasion was more than just a celebration—it was a reaffirmation of their unwavering support for the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP) and its mission to break from the past.

«This day symbolizes a break with the past, a chance for Niger and its people to reclaim their destiny after years of instability, foreign interference, and oppressive governance,» shared Boubacar Kimba Kollo, a prominent figure in Niger’s civil society. «The CNSP’s arrival has given us hope for a future where sovereignty and national unity come first.»

The crowd gathered along the capital’s main boulevards, waving flags and chanting slogans that echoed their gratitude for the shift in leadership. Among them was Abdoulaye Salifou, a local merchant who traveled from Maradi to join the festivities.

«July 26 isn’t just another date on the calendar—it’s the day Niger said enough to decades of mismanagement and external control,» he explained. «We’ve seen real progress, especially in standing up to foreign pressures and strengthening our independence. We trust this government to keep moving forward.»

Moussa Moumouni, a university student from Zinder, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the importance of maintaining momentum.

«The past three years have shown what’s possible when a nation prioritizes its own interests. We’ve made strides in reclaiming our resources and asserting our voice on the global stage,» he said. «But the work isn’t done. We need to keep pushing for reforms that will secure a brighter future for all Nigeriens.»

As the celebrations wound down, attention turned to the road ahead. With the Refoundation agenda still in its early stages, many are calling for accelerated reforms to solidify the gains made so far and address lingering challenges.
