Morocco acts swiftly to prevent illegal border crossings into Ceuta

Rabat has activated emergency measures after unverified online claims suggested the Moroccan-Spanish border near Ceuta would open this Saturday, August 15. Social media posts falsely announcing the “opening of the Fnideq-Ceuta crossing” on a Spanish public holiday have sparked concerns about a potential mass migration attempt.

The Moroccan Ministry of Interior confirmed that all necessary steps have been taken to prevent illegal border crossings and to identify individuals attempting to organize or participate in such movements. Speaking to local media, spokesperson Rachid El Khalfi emphasized that authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will take legal action against those spreading disinformation.

Crackdown on migration incitement

Investigations have uncovered a network of individuals actively promoting collective illegal migration toward both Ceuta and Melilla, Spain’s other North African enclave. A group of suspects has already been detained and is under formal investigation. Authorities warn that anyone found encouraging or facilitating unauthorized border crossings will face prosecution.

This crackdown follows a record surge in irregular migration to Ceuta at the end of July, when approximately 72,000 people crossed the border in just a few days. Spanish authorities have since repatriated around 70,000 individuals back to Morocco, leaving about 2,000 still present in the enclave, including over a thousand unaccompanied minors.

Human toll of the crisis

The recent migration surge has had devastating consequences. Moroccan officials report 11 deaths on their side of the border, while Spanish forensic experts confirm at least 80 fatalities on the Spanish side. Local human rights organizations, such as the Moroccan Association for Human Rights, estimate the death toll to be significantly higher, with at least 141 lives lost during the crossing attempts.
