Morocco names highway after Trump in Western Sahara
The 1,055-kilometer expressway becomes Africa’s longest road infrastructure, as announced by King Mohammed VI.
In a symbolic move, Morocco has named a major highway after former U.S. President Donald Trump. The 1,055-kilometer Tiznit-Dakhla expressway now bears the name “Donald J. Trump Highway,” linking southern Morocco to the disputed territory of Western Sahara, King Mohammed VI announced in a letter dated July 2.
In the letter, the King expressed gratitude to Trump for his “historic recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara in 2020,” a decision he described as “forever etched in the memory of Moroccans.” The infrastructure stands as Africa’s longest roadway, spanning from the southern city of Tiznit to Dakhla, a key urban center in Western Sahara.
On his Truth Social platform, Trump responded with enthusiasm, calling the honor “tremendous” and expressing his eagerness to travel the highway someday. “What an honor! I can’t wait to drive the entire length soon!” he wrote, though Rabat has not confirmed his comments.
The decision highlights ongoing diplomatic ties between Morocco and the U.S., particularly following America’s recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara—a move that reshaped regional dynamics. The highway, now renamed, serves as a testament to that relationship and Morocco’s infrastructure ambitions.
