Malian army eliminates key jnim leader in drone strike

The Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) officially announced on Sunday, June 14, the successful targeting of a jihadist commander, identified as a prominent figure within the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM).

According to a statement released by the General Staff, the individual, known by several aliases including Oumar Kéréna, Farouk, and Housseini Mawdo, was killed during a drone strike executed on June 3. The operation took place in Mougnan, a locality approximately forty kilometers from Djenné, situated in the central region of the country.

Malian authorities characterize him as a former operative of the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO), who progressively ascended to an influential position within various jihadist factions active across Mali and the broader regional landscape.

A central figure in jihadist networks

Military intelligence indicates that the neutralized leader previously held command responsibilities within the Serma area. Subsequently, he oversaw armed operations spanning several sectors across the Sikasso and Koutiala regions, as well as specific zones within neighboring Burkina Faso.

The General Staff assesses that he played a pivotal coordinating role within networks affiliated with the JNIM, which stands as the principal jihadist coalition operating throughout the Sahel and maintains ties to Al-Qaeda.

Bamako intensifies its security approach

This significant announcement closely follows an unprecedented strategic shift by Malian authorities. On June 4, the government implemented a reward system, offering financial incentives potentially reaching two billion CFA francs for actionable intelligence leading to the location or arrest of several high-ranking leaders of armed and terrorist groups.

The most substantial reward is specifically aimed at Iyad Ag Ghali, widely recognized as the nation’s most wanted individual.

This latest military success underscores Bamako’s escalating military pressure against jihadist organizations. It occurs amidst a backdrop of increasing armed assaults and persistent security challenges impacting multiple regions across Mali and the wider Sahel.
