Mali militant denies death of senior leader after reported airstrike

The Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM), a prominent armed group operating in Mali, has firmly refuted claims regarding the death of its second-in-command, Sidna Ag Hita. These reports emerged shortly after the African Legion announced a military operation in the Diabali area of central Mali, where Ag Hita was reportedly targeted in an overnight airstrike and rocket attack on a militant camp.

According to JNIM-affiliated sources, Ag Hita remains alive and in good health. They dismissed the death claims as baseless, emphasizing that no official statement or credible evidence has been released to confirm his demise. The group has yet to issue any communication regarding injuries or fatalities sustained during the operation.

On May 27, the African Legion released a statement detailing the strike, which targeted a rural encampment linked to the militant organization. The statement indicated that intelligence suggested Ag Hita was present at the site at the time of the attack.
