After relocating to Morocco following his departure from office in March 2024, former Senegalese President Macky Sall is set to return to Dakar on July 17. The visit will include a private meeting with current Head of State Bassirou Diomaye Faye, as announced by Sall himself.
The purpose of the trip is tied to Sall’s ongoing campaign for the position of United Nations Secretary-General. In a public statement, he expressed gratitude to President Faye for the scheduled audience and extended his appreciation to the Senegalese people for their continuous encouragement since he declared his candidacy.
Sall’s return to the capital has already sparked debate among political figures, particularly within the Pastef party led by Ousmane Sonko. Some critics argue that welcoming the former president implicitly endorses the pre-election unrest and governance shortcomings attributed to his administration, including allegations of mismanagement in economic and financial matters. Notably, Sall’s UN candidacy was not endorsed by Senegal but by Burundi.
a long political journey
Macky Sall served as Senegal’s President from 2012 to 2024, succeeding his political mentor, Abdoulaye Wade. His rise in politics began when he took over Wade’s position as head of state. Prior to that, he held the role of President of the National Assembly.
Before ascending to the presidency, Sall accumulated extensive experience in government. He served as Prime Minister from 2004, stepping in for Idrissa Seck. Earlier roles included Minister of Mines, Energy and Hydraulics (2001–2002), Minister of State overseeing the same portfolio (2002–2003), and Minister of State for the Interior and Local Communities from 2003 to 2004—where he also served as government spokesperson. Additionally, he led PETROSEN as its Director-General.
international engagements post-presidency
Since leaving office and settling in Marrakech, Sall has maintained a high-profile international presence. He has attended numerous global summits, engaged in high-level discussions with world leaders, and participated in strategic consultations aimed at advancing his UN Secretary-General bid.
