Ten years after his departure for FC Barcelona, Lucas Digne is poised to return to Paris Saint-Germain, this time from Aston Villa. The French international defender, currently on international duty with France at the 2026 World Cup, has reached a verbal agreement with the capital club, according to multiple sources close to the negotiations.
Digne, who previously wore the PSG shirt between 2013 and 2016 before a loan spell at Roma, will complete his move by triggering the release clause in his Aston Villa contract. The clause, which was activated last summer when his deal was extended until June 2028, will be settled after the World Cup finals for a fee reportedly under €10 million. This would see the 30-year-old step into a backup role for Portuguese left-back Nuno Mendes at Parc des Princes.
From Barcelona to Birmingham and back to Paris
The 2018 World Cup winner, who also captained France during the tournament, has spent the past two seasons at Aston Villa after joining from Barcelona in 2022. His potential return to Ligue 1 comes at a crucial time for PSG, who are preparing for a new era under new sporting leadership following the departure of several key figures.
World Cup finale awaits as PSG finalize details
The timing of the deal is no coincidence. With France set to face Spain in one World Cup semi-final just days after the transfer window reopens, the club and player have agreed to finalize the paperwork once the tournament concludes. This ensures Digne remains fully focused on his national team duties until the competition reaches its climax.
