Lucas Chevalier’s psg transfer turns disastrous: experts weigh in on his future

Against this backdrop, Lucas Chevalier’s future at PSG appears increasingly uncertain. For football expert Walid Acherchour, the time has come for the French goalkeeper to seek playing time elsewhere. “If I were Chevalier, I would push for a loan. I would have a conversation with Luis Enrique, and if he couldn’t guarantee me the number one spot, I wouldn’t fight for it; I’d request a loan to play, and then perhaps return to PSG as the number one. Battling with Safonov, who had an incredible season… At what point can we doubt Safonov and reset the competition? He had an amazing second half of the season, proving incredibly important. On one side, we have a goalkeeper maximizing his potential, and on the other, one minimizing it. This isn’t a youth club; we’re not here to hand out favors; this is PSG. So, Safonov is number one, Chevalier number two. It would take a catastrophic fall from Safonov to see Chevalier reclaim the lead,” Acherchour explained during a recent discussion.

Walid Acherchour further emphasized that even last summer, he had hoped PSG would allow Lucas Chevalier to spend another season on loan at LOSC. “If I am Lucas Chevalier, or even his entourage, I would be questioning things – not a permanent departure, as that would be extreme – but he needs to play; he must play. The market opportunity for PSG was there last year, but I was among those who believed he should have been loaned to Lille for a year. I may say many foolish things, but in this instance… For now, his transfer to PSG has been nothing short of a disaster.”

Lucas Chevalier now faces stiff competition from Matvey Safonov, who was the starting goalkeeper for PSG’s second Champions League campaign. The Russian is widely expected to begin the season as the undisputed number one, though with Luis Enrique, nothing is ever set in stone. However, the former Krasnodar keeper has demonstrated superior mental fortitude compared to Lucas Chevalier. “Safonov is a genuine character with a strong personality, and he seems more integrated into the squad than Chevalier. With one goalkeeper, you sense the PSG jersey weighs 150kg, while for the other, it feels very light. I remain convinced that Chevalier is a better goalkeeper than Safonov, but he isn’t demonstrating it,” Walid Acherchour concluded. In contrast, Elton Mokolo, also present during the discussion, expressed a less definitive stance on Lucas Chevalier’s future: “If I were Chevalier, I would stay. I’d put on some Rocky music and fight for my place. Chevalier’s advantage is that he has a coach who will give him another chance; there will be rotation.”
