Tense detention operation in Ouagadougou
Sources close to Imam Mohamad Ishaq Kindo and the Federation of Islamic Associations of Burkina (FAIB) confirm his arrest on Tuesday afternoon. The influential cleric was reportedly apprehended by masked police and military personnel. This operation, carried out on the eve of the Muslim holiday of Eid, led to confrontations between security forces and worshippers present at the scene. Associates of the imam have reported several injuries sustained during the apprehension. The current whereabouts of the religious leader remain unknown.
Criticism over proposed legislation
Just two days prior to his detention, an audio recording widely shared across social media platforms captured the imam expressing strong reservations about a legislative proposal. This bill, approved in March, aims to regulate the exercise of religious freedoms within Burkina Faso. In his sermon, Mohamad Ishaq Kindo cautioned the authorities against any intention to prohibit public prayers. He also urged the nation’s leaders to “reflect more deeply on the implications of their decisions before acting.”
Protest dispersed by security forces
Hours after the arrest, hundreds of individuals gathered in Ouagadougou, demanding the immediate release of the imam. According to eyewitness accounts, security forces deployed tear gas to break up the demonstration. In response to the escalating situation, the Federation of Islamic Associations of Burkina called upon Muslim faithful to maintain “calm, restraint, and serenity.”
