Dakar witnessed a significant milestone on September 7, 2026, as Air Sénégal officially took delivery of a brand-new Boeing 737-800, christened “Gorée”. This acquisition, hailed by the national carrier as a crucial move to bolster its fleet and enhance Senegal’s aerial sovereignty, underscores the country’s growing ambition in the aviation sector.
The purchase was made possible through financial backing from the Senegalese government, facilitated by the Ministry of Land and Air Transport, led by Abdoul Ahad Ndiaye. Air Sénégal views this as a testament to the nation’s resolve, under President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, to equip the country with an aviation resource that matches its economic, touristic, and international aspirations.
The aircraft, a single-aisle jet from the renowned Boeing 737 NG family, is celebrated for its versatility on short and medium-haul routes. It is expected to expand the airline’s capacity, enabling more efficient network operations. Configured with a two-class layout, the plane offers 174 seats in total: 12 in Business and 162 in Economy, all fitted with comfortable Recaro seats. Measuring 39.5 meters in length with a 35.8-meter wingspan, it also features three lavatories and three galley areas.
The naming of this aircraft “Gorée” carries profound significance.
