Former prime minister Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze placed in custody in Gabon

Gabon’s political landscape experienced a sharp escalation this Wednesday as Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze, a prominent figure in the former administration of Ali Bongo Ondimba, was officially placed in detention. Following his arrest on April 15, 2026, the former head of government is now under a committal order, marking a significant milestone in the legal inquiries launched by transitional authorities after the August 2023 coup d’état.

Serious legal allegations

The final Prime Minister of the Bongo era is currently facing specific judicial proceedings concerning his integrity in public office. According to judicial sources, the primary charges brought against him include:

  • Breach of trust: Authorities suspect that public resources or assets were diverted from their original purpose during his time in power.
  • Fraud: He is accused of using deceptive maneuvers to obtain illicit funds or undue advantages.

While the investigation is still in its preliminary stages, these accusations are part of a wide-ranging effort to “clean up” public finances, an initiative led by the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI).

The Gabonese Democratic Party responds

The political camp of the former Prime Minister was quick to react to the news. The Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG), along with his close associates, has denounced the legal proceedings, claiming they are fueled by political agendas rather than genuine judicial concerns.

In a press release issued shortly after his incarceration, the party stated:

“The treatment of Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze is clearly excessive. We are witnessing the instrumentalization of the justice system intended to marginalize a key political figure.”

His supporters have raised alarms regarding the circumstances of his arrest and the rapid decision to place him in custody, describing the situation as a “judicial spectacle.”

A pivotal moment for the transition

This detention comes at a time of increased oversight regarding the country’s former ruling class. While a segment of the Gabonese public views these actions as a welcome end to the era of impunity, international observers are closely watching to see if the rights of the defense and the principles of the rule of law are respected during this transitional phase.

For the transitional government, the objective is to demonstrate that accountability is a reality for everyone, regardless of their former status. For Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze, a complex legal battle is now unfolding from within the walls of Libreville’s central prison.
