Ebola outbreak spreads rapidly in dr Congo and Uganda

An Ebola outbreak has intensified in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) since its declaration in Ituri Province on May 15. The Bundibugyo strain, a less common Ebola variant without an approved vaccine or targeted treatment, continues to surge. Beyond Ituri, neighboring eastern provinces—North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uele, and Tshopo—along with Uganda, have also reported cases. Despite the deployment of international aid teams, including those from Medair and World Vision, the situation remains critical.

According to a United Nations update on August 3, the crisis shows no signs of slowing. Citing World Health Organization data from August 1, the report highlights 3,748 confirmed cases and 1,587 deaths by July 30, translating to a staggering 44% fatality rate. The escalation is alarming, with 567 new cases and 296 deaths recorded in just one week—the highest weekly toll since the outbreak began. Among those affected are 44 healthcare workers, bringing the total infected professionals to 151.

As the virus spreads unchecked, healthcare systems are struggling to keep pace. The United Nations has acknowledged that response efforts are scaling up to meet the growing demand. The International Medical Corps, in partnership with UN agencies, is expanding its interventions to curb further transmission and support affected communities.
