DRC military issues fresh smartphone ban for frontline troops

The Democratic Republic of Congo’s armed forces have reiterated a strict prohibition on unauthorized smartphone use by soldiers deployed in combat zones. Military leadership warns that improper mobile device usage poses severe security risks to both personnel and operational missions.

In an urgent communication released Thursday, July 9, acting military spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Mak Hazukay emphasized that even a single activated smartphone can compromise entire units. “Any phone left on or used carelessly can instantly reveal troop positions, enabling enemy forces to track and target our soldiers,” he stated.

Strict operational guidelines

The armed forces command has issued comprehensive directives for frontline personnel:

• Absolute prohibition on unauthorized smartphone use in combat zones
• No location sharing or disclosure of troop movements
• No mission details or operational information on social media
• No posting of combat footage or sensitive images
• Immediate reporting of any suspicious communications

Ongoing security challenge

This latest directive follows disturbing trends seen in recent weeks, particularly in South Kivu’s Fizi and Mwenga highlands, where DRC forces continue to face attacks from the M23 rebel alliance. Multiple videos have circulated online showing disgruntled soldiers criticizing their conditions, raising serious operational security concerns.

Military leadership points out this isn’t the first time such breaches have occurred. During previous confrontations near Goma, similar violations of operational security protocols led to multiple warnings from army command. “Every careless post or message can potentially cost lives and compromise national security,” stated a senior military official who requested anonymity.
