Benin’s President Romuald Wadagni arrived in Niamey on Tuesday for an official visit that could signal a turning point in relations between Benin and Niger, two nations whose ties have been strained since the Nigerien military takeover in July 2023.
At Niamey’s international airport, the Beninese leader was greeted by Niger’s transitional President, General Abdourahamane Tiani. This encounter marks the first visit by a Beninese head of state to Niger since the coup, underscoring the significance of the moment amid ongoing political and security tensions between the two countries.
Romuald Wadagni’s itinerary reflects his commitment to regional diplomacy. Following an earlier stop in Nigeria, the Beninese president chose Niger as his second destination, emphasizing the importance of neighboring relations. Official sources in Cotonou have indicated this visit is part of a broader effort to strengthen dialogue with all of Benin’s bordering nations.
The agenda for the discussions includes pressing security challenges, as both countries face an escalating jihadist threat along their shared border. For years, northern Benin and western Niger have been recurrent targets of attacks by armed groups linked to extremist movements operating across the Sahel.
Earlier signs of easing tensions emerged during Romuald Wadagni’s inauguration in Cotonou, where Niger’s Prime Minister, Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, was in attendance. In recent days, Nigerien state media has also highlighted the deep historical and cultural connections between the populations of both nations.
After concluding his stay in Niamey, the Beninese president is expected to proceed to Burkina Faso, another regional ally under military rule and a partner within the Alliance of Sahel States. This diplomatic tour is widely seen as an attempt to restore dialogue with Sahelian capitals and foster a climate of regional cooperation.
