Tori-Bossito hosts pivotal tree-planting ceremony to launch 2026-2027 reforestation drive
On the morning of Monday, 1 June 2026, the grounds of École Primaire Publique (EPP) Hêkandji in Tori-Bossito echoed with young voices as the Republic of Bénin inaugurated its 42nd National Tree Planting Day. This annual observance, first established in 1985, marked the official launch of the 2026–2027 national reforestation campaign under the theme “Children, forest ambassadors committed to a verdant Bénin.”
The ceremony unfolded simultaneously across all twelve departments of the country, uniting political leaders, senior forestry officials, municipal representatives, development partners and local citizens in a shared pledge to halt land degradation and restore the nation’s vegetative cover.
A generation mobilised for environmental stewardship
The decision to host the flagship event within a primary school was a deliberate strategy to embed eco-citizenship in the earliest years of learning. By designating pupils as “Forest Ambassadors,” the government has entrusted the younger generation with a civic duty: to nurture saplings and champion sustainable environmental practices within their families and villages.
Sowing seeds for climate resilience
With the Sahel’s changing climate intensifying pressure on agriculture and water resources, the current reforestation campaign takes on heightened significance. While Monday’s event centred on the symbolic planting of the first seedlings, officials underscored the critical phase that follows: rigorous post-planting care and maintenance.
Long-term success will hinge on sustained community involvement and the coordinated support of technical and financial partners to ensure that each young tree achieves optimal survival rates.
A testament to international commitments
The 42nd edition reaffirms Bénin’s dedication to international accords combating desertification and signals a decisive shift toward immediate, youth-driven ecological transition. The nation now demonstrates that environmental stewardship is not a distant aspiration but an unfolding reality, powered by a generation poised to embrace a greener future.
