Deadly boko haram assault claims lives of Niger soldiers near n’guigmi

In a brutal dawn raid on Friday, a military outpost near N’Guigmi, a key garrison town in southeastern Niger’s Diffa region, came under fierce attack from Boko Haram militants. The assault resulted in the deaths of approximately a dozen soldiers, according to local accounts obtained by field reporters on Saturday.

The strategic importance of N’Guigmi

Nestled along the shores of Lake Chad—a vast wetland straddling Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad, and Niger—N’Guigmi has long served as a critical military stronghold. However, since 2009, the town has also become a hotspot for Islamist insurgents, hosting both Boko Haram fighters and members of the Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP).

Casualties and aftermath

Witnesses described a chaotic scene as militants launched their assault before sunrise. “Around ten soldiers were killed in the attack,” revealed a local resident who asked to remain anonymous for security reasons. “The attackers also suffered losses, and the army has since launched sweeping clearance operations in the area.”

Further reports from N’Guigmi residents, circulating on social media, confirmed the grim toll: ten soldiers and four members of the national guard were slain in the raid. While no official death toll has been issued, Niger’s state-run news agency acknowledged fatalities in an attack “carried out by Boko Haram elements on the outskirts of N’Guigmi.”
