Dakar court examines complaint against Ousmane Sonko over Touba remarks

A coalition representing the descendants of Serigne Touba has filed a formal complaint against political figure Ousmane Sonko in Dakar’s high court. The group accuses him of making damaging remarks about the sacred city of Touba.
The group, known as the Collective of the Grandsons of Serigne Touba, officially submitted their complaint under case number 12562 at the Dakar high court. This legal action follows recent public statements attributed to Sonko during the inauguration of his party’s headquarters over the weekend. According to reports from witnesses, he alleged that “dirty money has entered the holy city of Touba,” a claim that has since sparked significant controversy.
Serigne Modou Maroun Niang and Serigne Mourtalla Bousso, speaking on behalf of the collective, argue that Sonko’s remarks constitute a serious attack on the honor, dignity, and moral standing of Touba and its residents. They emphasize that Touba, founded by Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, is built on pillars of faith, integrity, and justice. The plaintiffs maintain that the allegations have tarnished the city’s spiritual reputation and cast unfounded suspicion over its moral integrity.
The complaint calls for a thorough investigation to verify the accuracy of Sonko’s statements and to assess any potential legal consequences. The collective has formally requested that the prosecutor summon Sonko for questioning to clarify his remarks and provide any supporting evidence. They urge authorities to pursue all necessary legal avenues, warning that if the accusations are proven unfounded, charges such as defamation or spreading false information could apply under Senegalese law.
