Following initial plans to delegate powers to a single figure, Laurent Gbagbo has instead appointed five high-profile leaders to key positions within the PPA-CI party.

The restructuring, announced in Abidjan, introduces a collective leadership model designed to strengthen the party’s operational efficiency and unity, according to Gbagbo.

New leadership roles and responsibilities

The reshuffle places Assoa Adou at the helm as the party’s first vice-president, tasked with ensuring strict adherence to the PPA-CI’s guiding principles and internal policies.

Hubert Oulaye steps into the role of second vice-president, overseeing party affairs and presiding over central committee meetings.

Emmanuel Ackah, a former ambassador, assumes the position of third vice-president, responsible for energizing grassroots engagement and mobilizing party members nationwide.

Justin Katinan Koné continues in his role, managing the party’s overall political strategy and policy direction.

Sébastien Dano Djédjé takes charge of the newly created Strategic and Political Council, where he will oversee high-level decision-making processes.

Collective governance vs. centralized control

While the reshuffle introduces a more shared governance structure, political analyst Abdourahmane Barry cautions against overestimating its significance. He emphasizes that ultimate authority remains firmly in Gbagbo’s hands, describing the changes as primarily administrative rather than transformative in terms of leadership.

Barry notes that the five appointees will handle day-to-day operations, while Gbagbo retains final say on major strategic and political decisions.
