The Embassy of Côte d’Ivoire to the French Republic and the Principality of Monaco has issued a forceful declaration in Paris, expressing its profound disapproval following comments made by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, president of the La France insoumise party. The diplomatic mission views these statements, delivered during a political rally in France, as a direct affront to Ivorian institutions, the Ivorian people, and President Alassane Ouattara.
According to the embassy’s statement, Ambassador Maurice Kouakou Bandaman highlighted Mélenchon’s specific criticisms of Ivorian political life. The French politician reportedly accused the Ivorian head of state of marginalizing political adversaries during the most recent presidential election and securing a fourth term, which Mélenchon controversially labeled as “unconstitutional.”
The Ivorian diplomatic representation unequivocally categorizes these pronouncements as “irresponsible, irreverent, insulting, and degrading.” It firmly asserts that the French political figure possesses no legitimate authority, qualification, or expertise to pass judgment on Ivorian institutions, which were responsible for organizing and validating the nation’s various electoral processes.
The embassy further underscored Côte d’Ivoire’s status as a sovereign nation since gaining independence on August 7, 1960. This emphasizes that no foreign political official has the right to make what are deemed offensive remarks concerning the country’s internal affairs.
In its official declaration, the embassy also brought attention to the enduring bonds of friendship and cooperation between Côte d’Ivoire and France. These relations, it states, are built upon mutual respect and have been significantly strengthened under the presidencies of Félix Houphouët-Boigny and Alassane Ouattara. The embassy suggested that any political leader aspiring to the highest office in France should duly consider the strategic interests inherent in the relationship between the two nations.
Concluding its statement, the Embassy of Côte d’Ivoire to the French Republic and the Principality of Monaco announced its intention to pursue “all legal actions” available. This measure aims to ensure that the remarks, which it considers an offense to the Ivorian people and their President, are formally addressed before the appropriate legal authorities.
