The Côte d’Ivoire has stepped up its diplomatic engagement by actively participating in the second session of the International Migration Review Forum (IMRF) at the United Nations headquarters in New York. Through this strategic involvement, the country reaffirms its commitment to a migration governance model rooted in cooperation, human dignity, and sustainable development.
This high-level gathering, centered on tracking progress toward the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration—adopted in Marrakech in 2018—brings together nations to address global human mobility challenges.
Dr. Hinin Moustapha, Director-General of the National Population Office (ONP), represented Dr. Souleymane Diarrassouba, Minister of Planning and Development, during key sessions. He highlighted Côte d’Ivoire‘s advancements in migration management across critical areas such as data systems, vulnerability reduction, anti-discrimination efforts, and international cooperation.
Data-driven migration governance: a cornerstone of ivoirian strategy
The ivoirian delegation underscored the importance of robust statistical frameworks to deepen understanding of migration patterns. Côte d’Ivoire has undergone a structural overhaul of its data collection and analysis systems, striving to produce reliable, up-to-date, and disaggregated information to guide effective public policy.
A landmark achievement in this vision is the 2025 national migration survey, a testament to the country’s ambition to become a leading voice in evidence-based migration governance across Africa. This initiative reflects a broader commitment to transparency and informed decision-making in migration policy.
protecting migrants and building inclusive societies
Beyond data, Côte d’Ivoire places strong emphasis on the welfare of migrants. The government has strengthened support and reintegration mechanisms through integrated social policies, ensuring vulnerable populations receive adequate care and opportunities for dignified return and inclusion.
Combating discrimination remains a priority. Through targeted awareness campaigns and institutional strengthening, the country is fostering a more inclusive society where human rights are respected and diversity celebrated.
a call for solidarity in global migration governance
The ivoirian delegation advocated for an international cooperation framework grounded in solidarity and shared responsibility. The country argues that migration challenges cannot be resolved in isolation; they require coordinated action among countries of origin, transit, and destination.
This participation at the IMRF underscores Côte d’Ivoire‘s evolving perspective on migration—not merely as a social or security issue, but as a strategic driver for economic growth, cultural enrichment, and human development. By embracing migration as an opportunity rather than a burden, the country aims to harness its potential for shared prosperity while upholding dignity, solidarity, and evidence-based policymaking.
