At the prestigious Eurosatory international defense and security exhibition, General Issakha Malloua Djamouss, Chad’s Minister of Armed Forces, Veterans, and War Victims, engaged in crucial discussions with his French counterpart, Minister of Armed Forces Catherine Vautrin. This high-level meeting served as a continuation of the strategic dialogue previously established between Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno and French President Emmanuel Macron.

The central focus of their talks revolved around reinforcing bilateral relations and exploring new avenues for defense and security cooperation. Both nations reiterated their unwavering commitment to upholding each other’s strategic interests and national sovereignty, according to statements from the Chadian Ministry of Armed Forces.

Ministers Djamouss and Vautrin meticulously reviewed strategies for implementing a recently signed letter of intent between Chad and France. They articulated a shared ambition to cultivate a robust partnership founded on mutual trust and sustained dialogue, essential for effectively confronting contemporary security challenges across the region. This demonstrates a proactive approach to enhancing Chad France defense cooperation.

Chad emphasized its dedication to a balanced and reciprocally beneficial partnership, recognizing its vital role in fostering regional stability and bolstering the capabilities of the Chadian Armed Forces. Specifically, collaboration between the air forces of both countries has emerged as a key priority. Potential areas for this enhanced partnership include advanced training programs, critical intelligence support, and comprehensive French assistance aimed at significantly improving Chad’s aerial capabilities. This strengthens West Africa Sahel security efforts.

The French military has expressed a keen interest in re-establishing access to the N’Djamena air base, a move that would enable Paris to facilitate aircraft landings and take-offs as operational needs dictate. Chadian military leaders recognize the potential benefits of a French presence, viewing it as a valuable asset in responding to evolving security threats within the region.

Chadian authorities are actively pursuing closer ties with France, indicating dissatisfaction with the security proposals offered by other potential international partners. This underscores the strategic importance of this renewed collaboration in shaping Sahel politics today.
