The Cameroonian government unveiled the Pandemic Fund on Wednesday, a global mechanism established to help nations better anticipate major health threats. The launch event was presided over by Public Health Minister Manaouda Malachie. The $23.5 million funding will reinforce the country’s epidemic prevention, detection, and response framework, grounded in the “One Health” approach that integrates human health, animal health, and environmental conservation to address disease emergence factors.

Nationwide deployment across ten regions

The initiative will be rolled out across all ten regions of Cameroun. Forty-two health districts have been prioritized for intensive support, with investments targeting enhanced epidemiological surveillance, early warning systems, laboratory capacity building, healthcare worker training, emergency response organization, and resource mobilization. During the launch ceremony, the Health Minister stressed that countries with robust laboratories, skilled personnel, and prepared administrations are far better equipped to contain outbreaks when they occur.

The project is being implemented with support from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Bank, and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). Established in 2022 following the Covid-19 pandemic, the Pandemic Fund finances initiatives to strengthen countries’ capacities in preventing, preparing for, and responding to health emergencies. The mechanism is now active in 128 countries, including Cameroun.
