Cameroon’s military leadership undergoes significant reshuffle from abroad

President Paul Biya of Cameroon has orchestrated a sweeping military restructuring while overseas, with several decrees bearing his signature published in recent days. The sweeping changes include the appointment of five new brigadier generals, a new chief of general staff, and the reassignment of multiple territorial and strategic unit commanders, including the Presidential Guard.

The most notable promotion is that of Raymond Jean Charles Beko’o Abondo, who has been elevated to brigadier general while retaining his long-standing position as head of the Presidential Guard—a role he has held for over a decade. Security analysts highlight this as a historic moment, marking the first time a Commander of this elite unit, established in 1985, has held the brigadier general rank. The move is widely interpreted as a strong endorsement from the Head of State.

General Ebaka Hippolyte takes over as the new major general of the armed forces staff, succeeding his predecessor who has been placed in the second section. Additionally, six new territorial commanders have been appointed across four of Cameroon’s five inter-service military regions, covering critical security zones from the Far North—where Boko Haram remains a persistent threat—to the Anglophone Southwest regions.

Beyond their military implications, these leadership changes carry significant political weight. They reinforce the chain of command and underscore President Biya’s continued authority despite his extended absence from the country. However, critics, including figures from the Movement for the Rebirth of Cameroon (MRC), argue that these measures fail to address broader concerns about governance transparency. The opposition continues to demand greater openness and the formation of a government, a pledge President Biya made in December 2025.
