Bénin leads global ocean prediction training with OPERA project

The Bénin has taken a decisive step forward in addressing critical coastal and Gulf of Guinea challenges through the OPERA project (Ocean Prediction Enhancement in Regions of Africa). This international online training program, designed to strengthen ocean forecasting expertise, has successfully engaged nearly 1,200 participants worldwide, catapulting local universities and researchers into the spotlight of global maritime research.

Bénin emerges as a key player in global ocean science

Led at the national level by the UNESCO / CIPMA Chair at the University of Abomey-Calavi, the seven-week MOOC has showcased the country’s academic leadership in marine science. With 1,162 registrants hailing from 111 countries, Bénin stands out as the most represented nation, reflecting the strong commitment of its educators, students, and environmental managers.

Dr. Frédéric Bonou, a researcher and lecturer at the University of Abomey-Calavi, highlights the program’s practical approach:

Cutting-edge tools for Bénin’s coastal and fishing challenges

Over 21 hours of interactive sessions, participants delve into advanced technologies such as satellite observation, Argo floats, and numerical modeling. The goal is clear: empower local stakeholders with actionable skills to tackle pressing issues:

  • Coastal erosion prevention: Enhancing wave and tide forecasting to safeguard the coastal strip.
  • Sustainable fisheries management: Mapping and predicting high-yield fishing zones.
  • Maritime safety: Strengthening surveillance of Beninese waters and pollution risk mitigation.

A select group of 500 learners receives tailored mentorship, culminating in an academic certification co-delivered by the UNESCO Chair at the University of Abomey-Calavi and Toulouse University.

EU-backed initiative drives regional collaboration

The program’s success stems from a robust partnership between the University of Abomey-Calavi, the Gulf of Guinea Ocean Sciences Summer School (GGOSSS), and Mercator Ocean International, with financial backing from the European Union under the Arc X / Global Gateway initiative.

By positioning Beninese youth and volunteer scientists at the heart of an international expert network—including researchers from France, the United States, and Spain—the country underscores its commitment to leveraging ocean science as a cornerstone of sustainable development and maritime sovereignty.
