Bénin 2060: education council focuses on science and technical training

From August 5 to 7, 2026, Cotonou will host a pivotal gathering as the Conseil national de l’Éducation (CNE) convenes its third consultative assembly. The event centers on advancing scientific, technological, and vocational training pathways—key pillars for shaping Benin’s future workforce and economic landscape.

The three-day deliberation brings together government leaders, educators, private sector representatives, technical partners, financial backers, and civil society stakeholders. Together, they will assess strategies to steer students toward disciplines critical for industrialization and digital transformation.

Strengthening STEM and vocational pathways for national growth

The assembly, held at the Golden Tulip hotel, serves as a platform to align educational priorities with Benin’s long-term development goals. Discussions will explore ways to elevate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education while expanding vocational training opportunities that match labor market demands.

Participants include CNE members, government officials, university representatives, public and private institutions, and civil society groups. The goal is to foster collaborative insights that inform policy decisions and enhance educational outcomes nationwide.

The CNE’s executive secretary, Clément Chabi, emphasized the institution’s role as a national dialogue hub. He highlighted how investing in youth, research, and human capital quality is essential for achieving sustainable development, prosperity, and technological sovereignty.

Shaping Benin’s educational future through strategic recommendations

Noël Ahonangnon Gbaguidi, CNE president, outlined the council’s legal and strategic mandate. The body is tasked with defining major educational orientations, coordinating the national system, and monitoring public policy implementation in the sector.

Comprising 69 members from public and private sectors, the consultative assembly reviews activity reports and financial accounts. It then formulates recommendations aimed at improving the efficiency and performance of Benin’s education system.

Over three days, delegates will evaluate progress on recommendations from previous sessions. Key focus areas include enhancing teaching quality and aligning educational priorities with the Bénin 2060 vision—a long-term blueprint for the country’s socioeconomic advancement.

The CNE underscores that strengthening STEM and technical fields is vital for driving innovation, supporting digital transformation, and meeting the needs of Benin’s growing industries. Concrete steps for implementing these recommendations will be addressed during the deliberations.
