Attacks in Bamako: Mali accuses foiled plot against Goïta, Burkina Faso bans TV5

The tense atmosphere in Bamako has barely eased since the violent attacks on April 25, which left General Sadio Camara, the military regime’s second-in-command, dead in their wake. Now, the Malian Armed Forces are shedding light on a meticulously planned assassination attempt targeting the nation’s top leadership, including Transition President Assimi Goïta.

According to military officials, the operation involved multiple suicide vehicle bombings, with one of the explosive-laden cars reportedly heading straight for the presidential residence. This sinister plot was designed to endanger the lives of our leaders, explained Commander Djibrila Maïga, Deputy Director of Public Relations for the Malian Armed Forces, during a press briefing.

The fallout from the incident has extended beyond Mali’s borders. Burkina Faso’s media regulator has taken swift action by suspending broadcasts of TV5Monde, accusing the French-language channel of glorifying terrorism and undermining Mali’s transitional institutions. The Superior Council of Communication cited the channel’s coverage as a direct threat to regional stability.

In Ouagadougou, public reactions have been mixed. Some citizens fully support the ban, arguing that allowing channels linked to terrorism to air their programs is unthinkable, as expressed by Flore Guigma. Others criticize what they see as a condescending portrayal of Sahel nations, with Serge Théophile Bancé stating, I’ve stopped watching those channels altogether—their reporting reeks of arrogance.

International press freedom advocates have also weighed in. Reporters Without Borders condemned the suspension, calling it a move based on vague allegations that further shrinks the country’s already limited media space. Since Captain Ibrahim Traoré assumed power in Burkina Faso, several foreign outlets—including Le Monde, LCI, France 24, RFI, BBC News, and Voice of America—have faced temporary bans.
