Algiers and Niamey strengthen energy collaboration in hydrocarbons sector

Algeria’s Minister of Hydrocarbons, Mohamed Arkab, recently engaged in a significant videoconference discussion with Hamadou Tini, the Minister of Petroleum for the Republic of Niger. The talks centered on enhancing bilateral cooperation within the vital hydrocarbons domain, according to reports from the ministry.

This crucial meeting, attended by senior officials from both Algerian and Nigerien ministries, provided an opportunity to review Sonatrach’s recent operational activities in the Republic of Niger. Particular attention was given to the Kafra oil block, following the signing of the Algerian-Nigerien memorandum of understanding on hydrocarbons on March 24, 2026. This pivotal agreement was formalized during the second session of the Algerian-Nigerien Joint Cooperation Commission, co-chaired by Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb of Algeria and his Nigerien counterpart, Ali Lamine Zeine.

Discussions during the engagement also focused on assessing the progress of development and exploration work at the Kafra block. Furthermore, participants monitored the coordination efforts between the Sonatrach group, specifically through its subsidiary Sonatrach International Production and Exploration Corporation (SIPEX), and the Nigerien Petroleum Company (SONIDEP).

During the session, both delegations underscored the importance of integrating Nigerien enterprises and companies into ongoing energy projects. This strategic inclusion aims to foster local content development and provide robust support for Niger’s overall economic growth and development.

The two parties additionally explored avenues for bolstering cooperation in critical areas such as professional training, technology transfer, and the exchange of specialized expertise. This will be facilitated through structured training programs designed for executives and technicians, alongside the cultivation of partnerships between national companies from both nations, including Sonatrach, SONIDEP, and Naftal. Key areas for these collaborations encompass the transport, storage, distribution, and securing of supply chains for petroleum products across the West Africa Sahel region.

Concluding the productive meeting, both ministers reiterated their shared commitment to continuously strengthen bilateral cooperation in the hydrocarbons sector. They emphasized their dedication to realizing agreed-upon projects, ultimately contributing to economic development and promoting energy integration between Algeria and Niger.
