Just before the upcoming OM-Nice fixture, Yéhvann Diouf shared his thoughts on a season defined by intense highs and lows. The Sénégal international, who spent time on the bench this year, looked back at the emotional peak of his campaign: the Africa Cup of Nations final against Maroc.
« It was a chaotic game, explains the former Reims shot-stopper. Like many others, I would have preferred a different narrative. While the victory was the goal, the overall atmosphere left much to be desired. Several incidents cast a shadow over the image of the federations, the CAN, and the continent itself. However, the most important thing is that the match reached its conclusion and Sénégal triumphed on the pitch. »

Months after the Africa Cup of Nations final between Sénégal and Maroc, Yéhvann Diouf revisited his experience, specifically discussing the tension at the end of the game.
Diouf remains focused on the sporting achievement of the Lions of Teranga, who secured a 1-0 win in extra time thanks to Pape Gueye. He chooses to move past the administrative fallout following the CAF decision to award the win to Maroc, a dispute that has now moved to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Sénégal-Maroc: a security lapse that crossed the line
The Nice goalkeeper was in the thick of the action during one of the most talked-about moments of the match. He famously protected Edouard Mendy’s towel from being snatched by the opposition.
« I only realized the scale of it once we got back and people kept mentioning it to thank me, the player notes. If my actions helped put Édouard (Mendy) in a better mental space, then I am glad. However, it shouldn’t have happened. People might find it funny or part of the game’s folklore, but it is serious. My physical safety was put at risk, and that is unacceptable in football. »
