Willy Mengue calls on Equinoxe TV for balanced information after Mamadou Mota appearance
Willy Mengue, a key leader of the opposition against Maurice Kamto’s return to the presidency of the Movement for the Renaissance of Cameroon (MRC), is asking Equinoxe TV to rebalance its news coverage.
This call for balanced reporting follows the appearance of Vice-President Mamadou Mota on the programme “La vérité en face” on Sunday evening. Mengue argues that fairness in news treatment, the pursuit of journalistic truth, and the public’s right to information demand a more equitable approach.
In an open letter addressed to the CEO of Equinoxe TV, Mengue wrote: “There is an urgent need to organise – failing a direct debate between the two factions – a substantial right of reply on the programme ‘vérité en face’ dedicated to the contested return of Professor Maurice Kamto to the head of the MRC. You were willing to give a microphone to political ally Mamadou Mota on this pertinent question; the quest for truth requires you to offer the same service to the protesters whom I represent.”
During Sunday’s broadcast, Mamadou Mota defended Kamto’s return to the MRC presidency – a move that Willy Mengue firmly contests, labelling it a “fraudulent return”. Mengue further stated: “Equinoxe TV is known as ‘the people’s channel that reports beyond images’. Your reporting on the manipulation of the MRC’s fundamental texts to facilitate the fraudulent return of a resigning person to the party’s leadership will be just and fair if this right of reply, which is rightfully claimed, is granted. The Cameroonian people are watching you on this matter.”
