Senegal’s new government takes shape without pastéf

On the evening of Monday, June 1, Prime Minister Ahmadou Al Aminou Mohamed Lô officially unveiled Senegal’s new 30-member government. This significant cabinet formation, however, notably excludes representatives from the PASTEF party. This exclusion is particularly striking given that the nation’s head of state remains affiliated with this political group. PASTEF, led by prominent figure Ousmane Sonko, publicly declared its decision not to participate in the administration, citing fundamental “points of disagreement.” This development follows Sonko’s recent election as Speaker of the National Assembly in Dakar on May 26, an appointment that came after his previous dismissal from the Prime Minister’s office by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. The absence of PASTEF from this new government raises considerable questions about the future political dynamics and alliances within this West African nation.
