Dakar, May 20 — The Senegalese government is taking decisive steps to prevent potential flooding as the rainy season approaches. Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has issued urgent directives to relevant ministers to implement critical measures before the onset of heavy rainfall.
Government urges immediate action on flood prevention
During Wednesday’s Council of Ministers meeting, Sonko emphasized the need for swift action to mitigate flood risks. According to the government spokesperson, Marie Rose Faye, he stressed the importance of validating and updating all municipal emergency plans, ensuring early warning systems are fully operational, and verifying communication channels.
The Prime Minister also called for the immediate pre-positioning of intervention resources and the organization of a cross-ministerial simulation exercise before June 15, 2026. These measures aim to enhance preparedness and coordination ahead of the rainy season.
Coordination and readiness across ministries
The Hydraulics and Sanitation Ministry has already made significant progress in preparatory work, including clearing drainage networks, inspecting flood control structures, and positioning pumps. Sonko commended these efforts while underscoring the need for a unified approach.
He highlighted the interministerial nature of flood prevention, urging all state services to collaborate seamlessly under the leadership of the Hydraulics and Sanitation Minister. The Interior Ministry will play a key role in civil protection and crisis management, ensuring a coordinated response to potential emergencies.
