Senegal politics: mounting concerns over justice minister’s appointment

The appointment of Me Moussa Sarr as Senegal’s Justice Minister has triggered immediate reactions from Pastef leader Ousmane Sonko, who voices serious reservations about the new minister’s background and potential impact on his party.
Ousmane Sonko has raised concerns about the appointment of Me Moussa Sarr to the crucial Justice Ministry, questioning whether this choice truly aligns with Pastef’s expectations. In a public statement, the party leader also addressed Prime Minister Al Amine Lô and some members of his own party who have joined the government, signaling early tensions in the new administration.
From the moment the government was sworn in, criticisms began to surface—with the Justice Ministry emerging as the focal point of disagreement. Sonko argues that Me Moussa Sarr’s appointment is far from reassuring, citing the lawyer’s past involvement in several legal cases that have strained relations between Pastef and the judiciary.
« The lineup at the Justice Ministry raises red flags for us,» Sonko stated, emphasizing that the new minister’s history includes participation in high-profile cases that have contributed to ongoing judicial tensions. While the Pastef leader has stopped short of outright condemnation, he has made it clear that his party will closely monitor the new minister’s actions before drawing final conclusions.
« We have our doubts, but we will wait and see. And we will take necessary measures in Parliament,» he warned, hinting that legislative scrutiny will play a key role in assessing the minister’s performance.
Prime Minister Al Amine Lô comes under fire
The criticism doesn’t stop at the Justice Minister. Ousmane Sonko has also challenged Prime Minister Al Amine Lô, questioning whether the premier is prioritizing technocratic governance or slipping into political maneuvering. Sonko’s remarks suggest deep skepticism about Lô’s approach to leadership.
« I urge the Prime Minister to remain a technocrat. To step away from political games. Since he was chosen for his technical expertise, he should stick to it,» Sonko declared.
He went further, suggesting he possesses detailed knowledge of certain initiatives led by the Prime Minister. « I know many things about what’s happening and what he’s doing. Out of courtesy, I’ve been patient so far. But he shouldn’t push his luck,» Sonko cautioned.
Pastef officials face internal scrutiny
Sonko’s discontent extends beyond government members. He has also criticized several Pastef officials who accepted positions in the new administration, despite the party’s stated position. Among those named are Balla Moussa Fofana, Ibrahima Sy, and Yankoba Diémé, accused of joining the government without prior consultation with party leadership.
« I want to be clear: those who have taken seats in the government are acting on their own. And when the time comes, we will address their cases,» Sonko asserted, signaling potential internal consequences for these officials.
These early confrontations underscore the challenges facing Senegal’s new government. However, it is the appointment of Me Moussa Sarr to the Justice Ministry that has sparked the most significant unease, with Sonko reserving final judgment until concrete actions are taken.
