Shocking video surfaces in Martinez Zogo murder trial

The emergence of a harrowing video depicting the final moments of journalist Martinez Zogo has sent shockwaves through the courtroom at the Military Tribunal of Yaoundé.

For two consecutive days—June 1st and 2nd—judges permitted the unprecedented screening of footage that laid bare the brutality of the journalist’s final hours. The images, marked by extreme violence, left an indelible mark on both the victim’s family and everyone present in the courtroom.

courtroom falls into stunned silence

On the morning of June 1st, the air in the courtroom was thick with tension. As the video began, the room fell into a stunned silence. The footage showed Martinez Zogo lying motionless on the ground, his body bearing the unmistakable signs of severe physical abuse. Bloodied and barely able to speak, he repeatedly pleaded for help in a voice barely audible through the anguish.

The court was forced to suspend proceedings midway through the screening. The emotional toll was overwhelming. Ludovic Sabze, one of the defense attorneys, later remarked, “The impact was profound—almost unbearable. I doubt anyone in that room remained untouched.”

The next day, as the trial resumed, the weight of the previous day’s revelations lingered. Faces were drawn, and the atmosphere remained heavy with shock and disbelief. The video had been recovered from the private Google account of Maréchal des Logis Godje Oumarou Vincent, a former intelligence officer with the Directorate General of External Research (DGRE).

cybercrime expert exposes critical evidence

The prosecution called upon Georges Bell Bitjoka, a cybercrime specialist, to present his findings. His testimony introduced a pivotal piece of evidence: a meticulously detailed report that shed new light on the case. Calvin Job, the family’s lead attorney, described it as a turning point. “This report strips away the lies. It dismantles the false narratives that have clouded this case from the beginning.”

He praised the expert’s rigorous methodology and technical precision, stating, “If the court relies on this report, it will have already resolved 98% of the unresolved questions.”

Yet, a critical question remains unanswered: who ordered the abduction and torture of Martinez Zogo? To date, no definitive command structure has been identified, leaving the investigation in a state of partial clarity.

lingering doubts and unanswered questions

Paul Chouta, another observer closely following the trial, expressed frustration over the gaps in the evidence. “The expert’s findings revealed an alarming spike in communications between businessman Jean-Pierre Amougou Belinga and another individual, Justin Danwe, between January 18th and 28th—precisely the period following the journalist’s abduction and the discovery of his body.”

However, the expert also noted that 18% of data recovered from Amougou Belinga’s phone had been deleted, preventing a full assessment of his involvement. The defense team has requested additional forensic analysis to recover these deleted exchanges, hoping to uncover further insights.

The trial has been adjourned and is set to resume on June 22nd and 23rd, with hopes that further revelations may bring closure to a case that has gripped the nation.
