Ousmane Sonko’s leadership of Senegal’s National Assembly solidified

Ousmane Sonko’s tenure as President of the National Assembly has been definitively upheld. The Senegalese Constitutional Council dismissed the opposition’s challenge to his parliamentary return, ruling itself without jurisdiction to review the matter. This verdict stands as final.
Having been relieved of his duties as Prime Minister in late May by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, Mr. Sonko promptly reassumed his parliamentary seat and was subsequently elected to lead the National Assembly.
This judicial confirmation significantly bolsters his standing at the pinnacle of legislative authority, thereby enhancing his considerable influence within the Senegalese political arena.
Once close allies, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Ousmane Sonko now exhibit notable disagreements, particularly concerning economic strategies and the stewardship of public finances, signaling the start of a distinct new political chapter for Senegal.
