Senior opposition leader Joshua Osih is urging Cameroonian authorities to uphold the country’s electoral calendar without delay. As president of the Social Democratic Front (SDF), he insists elections belong to the people, not the government.
In Cameroon, opposition leader Joshua Osih is demanding immediate adherence to the electoral calendar. Speaking at a July 23 press conference, the Social Democratic Front (SDF) president emphasized that the electoral timeline is a matter for citizens, not government officials.
Osih called for all opposition parties, regardless of political leanings, to unite behind this critical national demand. «Elections must proceed without delay. The calendar isn’t set by the government—it’s set by the people. I urge the entire opposition to form a united front on this issue,» he declared. So far, no opposition figures have publicly responded to his appeal.
The timing of this demand follows the controversial postponement of municipal and legislative elections earlier this year. The government cited financial, logistical, and security constraints, along with calendar adjustments, as reasons for the delay. The National Assembly approved the government’s bill, and President Paul Biya’s decree formalizing the extension became effective in June 2026, prolonging mandates until February 2027.
Government officials defended the postponements, citing financial constraints, logistical challenges, and security concerns as key factors in their decision-making process.
