Cameroon’s opposition leader Joshua Osih has issued a stern warning to the government, demanding immediate respect for the electoral calendar.

Speaking at a press conference on July 23, SDF president Joshua Osih emphasized that the electoral timeline belongs to the people of Cameroon, not the ruling administration. He called for a unified opposition front to pressure the regime into honoring this fundamental right without further delays.

“Elections must happen on schedule—no postponements allowed. The electoral calendar is not the government’s property; it belongs to the people,” Osih declared. His call for opposition unity remains unanswered so far, as no political figures have publicly responded to his appeal.

This demand follows controversial delays in municipal and legislative elections earlier this year. The government justified the postponements by citing financial, logistical, and security challenges, as well as the need to reorganize the electoral schedule. However, a parliamentary vote on the government’s proposal and a presidential decree in June 2026 extended mandates until February 2027.

The administration has repeatedly pointed to financial constraints, logistical hurdles, and security concerns as reasons for pushing back elections. While these factors remain critical, critics argue that the delays risk undermining democratic processes and the will of the electorate.
