Iconic Bundesliga referee calls time on illustrious career

An emotional final chapter unfolded in Munich this past Saturday as Deniz Aytekin officiated his last Bundesliga match, a 5-1 triumph by Bayern Munich over 1. FC Köln. The veteran referee, whose defining moment came in 2017 during Barcelona’s legendary Champions League comeback, has decided to hang up his whistle after 254 top-flight games and more than 650 matches officiated across all competitions. His 18-year tenure at the highest level included three consecutive German Referee of the Year awards.
As the final whistle blew, players from both teams rushed to pay their respects, with England striker Harry Kane among those extending a personal tribute. Visibly moved, the 47-year-old Aytekin wiped away tears on the pitch, sharing his heartfelt thoughts: “After nearly two decades in the Bundesliga, leaving this football family isn’t easy. I’m deeply grateful, especially knowing that so many who matter most to me were here to share this moment.” He continued, “This league has given me incredible experiences—emotions I’ll cherish forever.”
The Bavarian giants marked the occasion with a heartfelt tribute on their official channels: “Dear Deniz Aytekin, congratulations on your remarkable career as a referee! After today’s game, we wish you all the best for the future!”
With just six days to go before Bayern’s high-stakes clash against Paris Saint-Germain, the timing of Aytekin’s farewell adds a poignant note to the club’s ongoing narrative.
