Gabon secures vice-presidency for the 81st United Nations General Assembly

Gabon achieved a significant diplomatic victory on June 2, 2026, by being chosen as one of the vice-presidents for the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. This appointment marks Gabon’s return to the leadership bureau of the UN’s primary deliberative body for the first time in nearly ten years.

Joining five other African nations—Cabo Verde, Egypt, Guinea-Bissau, Eritrea, and Zimbabwe—Gabon will officially begin its one-year term in September 2026. This coincides with the high-level opening of the 81st session of the General Assembly.

Gabon’s role in the international legislative agenda

Representing the African regional group, Gabon’s Permanent Mission to the UN will play a crucial part in steering global discussions. Working alongside the elected President, Khalilur Rahman, the Gabonese delegation will take on essential managerial and diplomatic responsibilities. Throughout the session, Gabon will be responsible for presiding over several plenary meetings, including high-level sessions.

Additionally, the nation will hold a seat on the influential General Committee. This body is vital for organizing the assembly’s work, determining the order of agenda items, and scheduling votes on significant global resolutions.

Advocating for African priorities

In its new capacity, Gabon will collaborate with other member states to champion the specific interests of the African Group. Key focus areas will include the advancement of sustainable development, intensifying climate action, and pursuing necessary administrative reforms within the United Nations system. This diplomatic engagement is a key component of the vision led by President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema.
