French national handed 20-year sentence in Mali over alleged coup plot

A French national, Yann Vezilier, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison by Malian authorities for allegedly plotting to destabilize the government led by General Assimi Goïta. The conviction follows a legal process that concluded with the delivery of the verdict.

The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs has strongly denied the allegations against Yann Vezilier, calling the charges “groundless.” In a statement, officials emphasized that the individual was performing official duties as part of a security cooperation mission at the French embassy in Bamako. “Our agent was engaged in legitimate security cooperation activities, and France categorically denies any involvement—direct or indirect—in attempts to destabilize Mali,” the ministry stated.

Alongside the 20-year prison sentence, Vezilier received a 20-year ban from entering Mali and a fine of 5,400 euros. The verdict was delivered by the criminal chamber of the specialized anti-terrorism unit following a trial held the previous day. Judicial sources confirmed the ruling and penalties imposed.

Allegations of conspiracy

Vezilier was arrested on August 13, 2025, during a joint operation conducted by Mali’s State Security services. At the time of his arrest, he was accompanied by several Malian military officers, all of whom have since been discharged from the armed forces. These officers have yet to face trial and are accused of orchestrating a spy network aimed at undermining Mali’s transitional institutions in a bid to stage a coup.

The allegations come at a time when Mali remains deeply embroiled in a prolonged security crisis, exacerbated by jihadist violence linked to Al-Qaïda and the Islamic State, as well as communal criminal gangs. Since 2020, the country has been under military rule following two successive coups d’état. In response to the instability, Bamako has shifted its political and military alliances away from Western partners, including France, toward closer ties with Russia.
