Deadly Ebola Outbreak Spreads in DRC
The ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has claimed over 500 lives, according to the latest data from the Congolese Ministry of Health.
- As of today, 1,561 cases have been confirmed, with 506 fatalities reported so far.
- A total of 253 people have made a full recovery, while 628 patients are currently being treated in isolation or hospitalization.
The outbreak, declared on May 15, has now spread to 36 health zones across the provinces of Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu, where community transmission of the virus continues unabated.
Ituri remains the hardest-hit province, accounting for over 91% of confirmed cases and nearly 84% of deaths since the start of the epidemic, according to Congolese authorities.
Rapidly Evolving Virus
The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola continues to evolve rapidly and is spreading with sustained intensity.
As of July 1, at least 10,821 individuals in contact with confirmed cases were being tracked in Ituri and North Kivu as part of efforts to contain the outbreak’s spread.
