DNCG imposes salary cap on Marseille and Lyon for 2026-27 Ligue 1 season

The two clubs were under close watch, and the verdict has arrived. This Friday, the DNCG announced the restrictions that Olympique de Marseille and Olympique Lyonnais will have to abide by during the 2026-2027 Ligue 1 campaign. For the Phocaeans, the National Directorate of Management Control of the LFP ruled for a “cap on the wage bill and transfer fees.”

Les Gones also face a penalty: a “cap on the wage bill in line with the recovery budget following the club’s change of control.” This news comes after the Professional Club Control Commission reviewed each club’s situation for the upcoming season. In a press conference, Michele Kang confirmed that Lyon will remain in Ligue 1 and that she is becoming the majority shareholder of the Rhône side.

Marseille already sanctioned by UEFA

For Marseille, this decision comes less than ten days after UEFA fined the club €10 million for breaching financial fair-play rules. The Marseille side knew they were in the crosshairs of French football’s financial watchdog.

The DNCG had announced on Tuesday that it had requested “additional documents” from the Marseille club, whose finances have been weakened by a difficult 2025-2026 season on all fronts. In 2021 and again in 2023, the Olympian club had already been subject to a salary cap.
