The Tillabéri region has once again been rocked by armed violence. On Friday, June 12, 2026, around 7:00 AM, the village of Goungo Koré, situated within the Ayorou commune, became the target of an assault launched by a terrorist armed group (GAT). This devastating attack resulted in the tragic loss of two civilian lives.
targeted abduction and tragic loss of life
The assailants stormed into the community, opening fire indiscriminately, which immediately sowed panic among residents and led to the instant deaths of two inhabitants.
Amidst this violent incursion, the terrorists also carried out the abduction of a man identified as Boubacar Yabilan, who hails from the neighboring village of Doulsou Gourma. Notably, this marks the second time Yabilan has suffered this fate, having previously been kidnapped by armed groups in 2023.
local militias thwart calculated provocation
Initial analysis suggests that this operation was not a simple act of pillaging but rather a deliberate and highly strategic provocation.
The attackers’ clear objective was to compel the self-defense militias from Goungo Koré, Séno, and Kandadji villages to abandon their defensive positions and engage in an open-field confrontation.
Confronted with this attempted psychological and military ambush, the local self-defense groups demonstrated remarkable restraint. By steadfastly refusing to be provoked and maintaining their strategic positions, they successfully averted a direct clash that could have resulted in significant casualties and further destabilized the already fragile area.
