Canary Islands Parliament honors Moroccan consulate’s achievements
Astrid Pérez, President of the Canary Islands Parliament, welcomed this Wednesday Fatiha El Kamouri, the Moroccan Consul General to the Canary Islands, marking the end of her four-year term in office. During this period, she significantly strengthened institutional relations between Morocco and the Canary Islands.
In a cordial meeting, Pérez expressed her deep appreciation for Consul El Kamouri’s dedicated work, highlighting the importance of ongoing dialogue and cooperation between the two institutions. She also wished her continued success in her professional future.
Fatiha El Kamouri, of Sahrawi origin, arrived in the Canary Islands in 2022 after serving for six years as Morocco’s Consul in Bilbao. During her tenure in northern Spain, she played a pivotal role in fostering institutional relations and supporting the Moroccan community residing in the region.
The work of Consul El Kamouri has had a profound and positive impact on the strengthening of relations between the Canary Islands government, led by Fernando Clavijo, and Morocco. Her efforts have been instrumental in aligning the region’s policies with Spain’s diplomatic stance on the Moroccan autonomy initiative for Western Sahara, recognizing the strategic importance of security, stability, and economic cooperation.
Beyond official visits and the signing of multiple collaboration agreements across key sectors, Clavijo’s recent hosting of a delegation from the Souss-Massa region in Las Palmas exemplifies this new dynamic. The meeting with Karim Achengli and over 80 business representatives from southern Morocco demonstrates how political discourse is being translated into tangible partnerships.
This institutional rapprochement underscores the Canary Islands’ role as a natural partner in Morocco’s development, rejecting divisive influences that once sought to undermine relations between the two regions.
Key sectors benefiting from this collaboration include desalination technology, infrastructure management, and technological research, where the Canary Islands’ expertise complements Morocco’s needs, particularly in its southern provinces.
Businesses in both regions are actively engaging to develop joint projects, reinforcing the foundation for lasting peace, mutual prosperity, and shared growth. Consul Fatiha El Kamouri’s tireless efforts over the past four years have been instrumental in making this partnership a reality.
