Burkina Faso faces deadly jihadist assaults in northern regions
Suspected jihadist groups launched devastating assaults in northern Burkina Faso over the weekend, resulting in the deaths of at least 22 military personnel and civilian defense volunteers.
One of the primary targets was a base belonging to a Rapid Intervention Battalion (BIR) located in Di, near Dédougou. This strategic outpost came under a fierce jihadist attack on Saturday morning. The tragic incident claimed the lives of no fewer than fourteen soldiers and seven members of the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP), who serve as crucial civilian auxiliaries to the armed forces.
Separately, the town of Solhan also suffered a brutal assault, where several individuals, including a high-ranking officer, were tragically killed. These coordinated attacks underscore the persistent security challenges facing Burkina Faso, particularly in its northern regions of the West Africa Sahel.
